DNC Volunteer Opportunities
The Denver 2008 Convention Host Committee is announcing three new volunteer opportunities for those interested in a playing a large role in the Convention:
Area Director
Volunteer Captain
Graphic Designer
Candidates for the Area Director and Volunteer Captain positions must meet the following criteria:
Have a current volunteer profile in our volunteer database
Be available to serve in the months of June, July and August for approximately 4 - 16 hours a week
Attend a mandatory training session in early June
Be on call and available to serve for the entirety of Convention Week (August 23rd-30th)
Volunteer Management Experience
Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people in a high pressure environment
Reliable
Self-directing
Volunteer Captains will supervise and provide support to all volunteers in their assigned facility or event.
Area Directors will supervise and provide support to Volunteer Captains within their area.

Applications must be submitted no later than May 2. These positions are voluntary, they are not paid.
Candidates for the Graphic Design position must meet the following criteria:
Have a current volunteer profile in our volunteer database
Experience designing brochures, print ads, banner designs, etc.
Ability in typography, page layout and corporate identity design
Ability to meet tight deadlines
Required Technical Skills:
Quark and/or InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop

Position Title: Area Director
Reports To: Host Committee Volunteer Coordinator
Applicants Must:
Be a current volunteer from Host Committee's Volunteer Database
Be willing to assume the responsibility of managing other volunteers
Be able to give significant time throughout the summer and be virtually on call around the clock the week of the convention
Attend training session in early June
Outline of Area Director's Responsibilities
Provide oversight for all volunteer-run functions within a designated geographical area
Report to Host Committee Volunteer Coordinator as appropriate and after shift changes or events during the week of the Convention
Orient and support Volunteer Captains within area
Work with Volunteer Captains to ensure that all volunteer slots are filled
Provide assistance to Volunteer Coordinators in planning, training and deploying
Training and Support Plan
Orientation training programs will be developed by the Host Committee Volunteer Department, and implemented by both staff and leadership volunteers during the months of July and August.
Time Commitment
Area Directors will begin their volunteer positions in June and continue through August, serving for approximately 4 to 16 hours a week, likely on an increasing basis throughout the summer of 2008
Area Directors must also be on call and willing to serve every day during the week of the Convention from August 23rd - 30th.
Qualifications Needed
Demonstrated leadership skills
Experience recruiting and managing people
Willingness to commit to maximum time commitment
Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of people, in a high-pressure environment
Self-directing
Reliable

Supervise all volunteers assigned to the facility or event
Report to Area Director on a regular basis including a report after each event or shift change
Guide and support volunteers within assigned responsibility
Work with Area Director and Volunteer Headquarters to ensure that all volunteer slots are filled
Make contact with facility management and offer assistance
Make contact with delegation chair (if appropriate) and offer assistance
Report any problems, accidents or issues immediately to Area Director
Training and Support Plan
Orientation training programs will be developed by the Host Committee Volunteer Department, and implemented by both staff and leadership volunteers during the months of July and August.

Publicity and Promotion
We need volunteers to coordinate letter writing and phone calling campaign to spread the news about Democratic issues and positions. Are you interested in writing letters to the editor or calling in to talk shows to talk about why Democrats have the vision that is good for America? If so, let us know.
We need good no-nonsense letters and calls that will speak to the common sense values that will resonate with all voters.
