DENVER COUNTY ASSISTANT SECRETARY
The Assistant Secretary is one of two appointed Denver Dems officers, appointed by the Secretary, and serving together with the Chair, Vice Chair, Secretary, Treasurer and Assistant Treasurer. Together these six officers are expected to provide leadership, represent the County Party at official events, meetings, rallies, etc., help guide Denver Democrats to become active or more active, take on responsibility and leadership roles, and maintain mutual communication from volunteers and PCP's on up. The officers meet together once a month, usually on the first Monday evening, and the Executive Committee meets each third Thursday, from 6:30 until about 8:30 or sometimes 9:00. These meetings are mandatory.
This role can change considerably based on the needs of the Secretary and the organization, and is also largely dependent on the particular skills and goals of the person appointed.
The official duties of the Secretary, as spelled out in DPoD rules, are to:
- Be responsible for collecting the minutes of all Central Committee and Executive Committee meetings and collect minutes for each sub-committee meeting
- Be responsible for coordinating all volunteer work and distribution of party communications
- Appoint an Assistant Secretary as an officer to assist in all designated duties
The Assistant Secretary may be asked to take on some of the following as well:
- Welcome new PCPs and providing orientation materials;
- Compile the party calendar and distribute a weekly e-mail newsletter;
- Provide information on the website, including posting calendar items, public election resources, party fund raising activities and events, and candidate and elected official information;
- Help elevate the profile of the Party through press releases that highlight Party accomplishments - reporting on elections, stances, resolutions, forums, meetings, Caucuses, Assemblies, events, fundraising goals, etc.;
- Assist with district-level communication by helping with and training others to use bulk emails and press releases for district events and news;
- Help coordinate and communicate notice and official calls for Central Committee Meetings (two per year), Assemblies (every two years) and Conventions (in presidential election years);
- Take notes and minutes at monthly Executive Committee Meetings.
Depending on how the six County Officers choose to divide responsibilities, and the strengths of the 12 Captains at Large and additional volunteers, the requested commitment should average about 5-10 hours per week, with more at busy times such as for annual fund raising events, and during bigger party meetings such as Caucus and Assembly.
