The Democratic Party of Denver Adopts a Resolution Supporting the Employee Free Choice Act

The Democratic Party of Denver adopted a resolution at its most recent Executive Committee meeting voicing their strong support of the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA) and urging Congress to pass the act.

The EFCA represents an opportunity to restore balance in the workplace and protect the rights of Colorado workers.  If passed, the EFCA would arguably be the most significant and necessary piece of labor legislation since the National Labor Relations Act of 1935.

“Historically, unions have fought to protect worker safety, to establish the 40-hour work week, and to ensure more working families have benefits including health care coverage,” Chair Cindy Lowery said.  “I am proud that the Democratic Party of Denver has now shown unwavering support of the Employee Free Choice Act, which will ensure continued support of working families and the rights of Coloradans and Americans to freely, without intimidation, join unions.  We call on our elected officials to do the same.”

The EFCA strengthens the economy by helping to rebuild the middle class and assures employees of having a voice on the job.  Recent data shows that 77 percent of the public believes in strong laws protecting the freedom of workers to make their own decision about having a union and that 60 percent of workers would join a union if they had a chance.

President Obama and Vice President Biden support the Employee Free Choice Act, which had majority support of Congress in 2007 but was nevertheless defeated.

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Democratic Party of Denver supports the Employee Free Choice Act, which would give employees the choice to form a union by majority sign-up or secret ballot; provide for first contract mediation and arbitration; and establish meaningful penalties for violations of a worker’s freedom to choose a union.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED AND PROCLAIMED that we urge Congress to pass the Employee Free Choice Act to help rebuild the middle class by protecting America’s employees’ freedom to choose for themselves whether or not to form a union.
